As part of the A57 road improvements, roundabouts at Junctions 10 and 11 of the M60 as well as the Bridgewater Circle at the entrance to intu Trafford Centre have been made larger to assist traffic flows in and around these areas. You may have noticed some construction work next to Barton high level bridge.
This is the location of the new lifting bridge that is due to be completed by the end of 2017. The most visual element of the scheme to be completed so far are the four 31 metre high concrete towers which will eventually support the deck of the new lifting bridge crossing the Manchester Ship Canal.
It will be a vertical lifting bridge, designed to make way for vessels as high as 20 metres passing underneath and has been modelled on the style of the Centenary Bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal.
As well as accommodating the dual carriageway, the deck has been future proofed to eventually allow for tram and power lines to be installed to facilitate an extension of the Metrolink, subject to future funding by Transport for Greater Manchester.
